Climbing is known for being an intense sport, but not only that. By climbing frequently, you will gain many benefits, and among them, you’ll work your entire body, including your mind, feel great and make some friends!
1. Climbing works your entire body.
It engages nearly all of the major muscle groups, strengthening the core, legs, arms, chest and back muscles. It even develops muscles in your forearms, hands and fingers.
2. It is a great cardio workout.
Rock climbing increases your heart and respiratory rates, making it a good choice for a cardio workout. Depending on the effort you put into your climb, and how many breaks you take, the cardio work involved can get your heart rate up to the same level as climbing stairs or jogging would, burning 500 to 900 calories per hour.
3. Rock climbing is a physical challenge as well as a mental one.
You have to figure out how to make it to the top of the wall, which involves a significant amount of problem-solving every time you look for the holds. You have to focus on the placement of your body and plan each move. When they compete, climbers are only allowed to look at the wall briefly before they climb and need to solve the problems right ahead of them.
4. It makes you feel good.
Climbing improves the ability to focus, relax and solve problems. It teaches you to control your thoughts and eliminate distractions, thereby sharpening your mental focus.Finishing a route gives a feeling of accomplishment, happiness and pride, which can amplify one’s self-confidence and self-reliance. As in other forms of physical efforts, the release of endorphins associated makes you feel good. It elevates your mood and reduces stress. And if you are climbing outdoors, being in nature will calm your mind even more.
5. Rock climbing is a very social activity.
Climbers are a very supportive community, sharing tips and encouragement with each other. Bouldering allows many climbers to be near one another when climbing, a potential catalyst for conversation and group forming. An on-site cafe and restaurant help to provide an atmosphere that fosters the social aspect of it.
